Lavender - It iss used in the traditional medicine of many cultures as a calmative. Studies have shown that the fragrance of lavender is calming and balancing. How Hopi Ear Candles work

The ear candling treatment is a relaxing one and the patient need only concern themself with lying fairly still in a comfortable position whilst the hopi ear candle is gently inserted into their ear.

When lit, the ear candles have a slight sucking action often referred to as the chimney principle, drawing any impurities to the surface where they can be gently removed. The rising air inside the ear sets up a vibration which gently massages the eardrum. This can help to regulate the pressures involved inside the ear.

The flow of air within the ear candle creates a circulation of concentrated vapour. This is soothing, calming and protects the irritated areas. Most impurities or deposits are carried away through the candle "chimney", although some of them can be found in the lower section of the candle after removal from the ear, or some wax could even work its way up to the surface 24-48 hours after.

From an esoteric point of view, the cleansing fire carries away negative vibrations from the fine metabolic energy fields and harmonises the energy status.

How Hopi Ear Candles are used

You are usually asked to lie comfortably and to relax. The hopi ear candle is then gently placed into the auditory canal, where it is lit and held in a vertical position. The therapists hands keep the candle steady. You will then experience a pleasant crackling sound and a warm comfortable feeling as the candle burns. The candle is allowed to burn down until it reaches a specific marker indicated on its side and then it is taken away while you lie there for a few moments.

The process is then repeated on the other ear.

A Brief Old History of Hopi Ear Candles

The history of hopi ear candles is a long one. Ear candles are an ancient and natural therapy handed down by many civilisations. They were used as far afield as Asia, the Siberian prairies, and most notably native America.

It is believed that the Ancient Greeks used ear candles, initially probably for cleansing, purifying and healing on a spiritual basis, but much later on a purely physical basis. However, the practice reached the modern world via the native North American Hopi Indians.

Ear candles were used traditionally by Shamen healers. Ancient wall paintings (such as those found within the caves of the Grand Canyon) show the importance of earcandling in initiation rituals and healing ceremonies of the tribe.

Our candles are still hand made today on the basis of the old traditional methods originating from the Hopi Indians, using the finest organic ingredients. Whilst our candles do not make use of the herbs and extracts that were part of the makeup of the original Hopi candles, they do use the finest beeswax and linen. We believe that quality is paramount and feel that this is clearly evident in our Hopi Ear Candles. What is a Hopi Ear Candle?

Ear candles are an ancient, mild and natural therapy and have been used by the Native American Indian for many years.

The Hopi candle is not a candle as such, but a hollow tube made out of cotton flax. To stiffen the flax, they are impregnated with extract of honey and herb oils (in particular chamomile, sage and St Johns wort), the healing properties of which have been known to the Hopi tribe for hundreds of years. The making of the candles is a complex process and all genuine Hopi candles are made in the traditional manner.

The Treatment

The treatment is very gentle and relaxing and may take up to an hour, depending on the condition being treated.

The candle is placed over the ear orifice and ignited. It is only allowed to burn to within 4 inches of the end of the candle. As it burns it produces a gentle local heat. The warm air combined with the oil and herbs soften the wax and draw it into the base of the candle. The candle is then removed and the ear and surrounding area is then massaged. The treatment is repeated on the other ear and then a complete facial massage is carried out, paying particular attention to the sinus areas.

What Conditions Can Ear Candles Help?

Ear candles can help with the treatment of sinusitis, rhinitis, earwax, earache and irritation of the ears including tinnitus. It is also suitable for the treatment of headaches and migraines. It is not suitable for those with perforated eardrums, where grommets are in place or those who may have an allergy to the ingredients. It is a safe and gentle treatment for children.

The number of treatments depends on how long the candle takes to burn down. Each treatment takes approximately 45 - 60 minutes and is very relaxing. It is advisable to put a few drops of warm olive oil in each ear for three days before treatment as this will help to soften the wax which will make it easier to remove. On the day of the treatment, you will be advised to remove all makeup and ear rings.

Ear Symptoms and Treatment with Hopi Ear Candles.

Our Hopi Ear Candles have been reported to us by some of our satisfied clients as being effective at treating a number of conditions that are associated with the Ear, Nose and Throat. These are listed for your information below.

Overview - Ears, Nose and Throat
Although the ears may appear to be isolated structures, they are directly linked to the nose and throat. The visible part of the ear, the pinna, is connected to the ear canal, which ends at the eardrum. Beyond this membrane lies the middle ear, an air filled space connected to the back of the nasal cavity and to the throat by a channel called the Eustachian tube. This tube ensures that the air pressure is the same on both sides of the eardrum.

Our ears provide us with two vital but very different senses: hearing and balance. Sound detected by the ears provides essential info about our external surroundings and allows us to communicate in highly sophisticated ways, such as through speech and music. In addition our ears contribute to our sense of balance, the largely unconscious understanding of the body’s orientation in space that allows us to maintain an upright posture and move without falling over. Ear problems and infections can upset this delicate balance.

Colds
Colds can occur at any time of the year, although infections are more frequent in the autumn and winter. About ½ of the population of Europe and the United States of America develops at least one cold each year.

The initial symptoms of a cold usually develop between 12 hours and 3 days after infection. Symptoms include:

  • frequent sneezing
  • runny nose
  • sore throat
  • coughs.

Bacterial ear infections are a common complication of colds.

Hopi Care : We recommend, whilst suffering from a cold, Hopi ear candles can be used up to 1 - 2 times per day for 5 - 7 days then less often in the second week if symptoms persist. Whilst these treatments will not cure a cold, they may help to clear congestion and ease discomfort.

Sinusitis
The sinuses are air filled cavities around the nose and eyes. Within the lining of the sinuses are many mucus-secreting glands. Mucus passes continuously through narrow channels that lead from the sinuses to the back of the nose.

Sinusitis is an inflammation of any of the sinuses. Sinusitis may be acute (developing and clearing up rapidly) or chronic (long term).

The most common cause of sinusitis is a viral infection such as the common cold. If the channels connecting the nose to the sinuses becomes blocked due to the viral infection, mucus collects in the sinuses.

Symptoms depend on which sinuses are affected and may include headache, pain and tenderness in the face that tends to worsen when bending down.

If symptoms do not improve within 3 days you should consult your doctor.

Hopi Care : In the first few days of acute sinusitis we recommend daily treatment. Monthly treatments may then help to prevent the severity and frequency of attacks. Chronic sinusitis will probably require weekly treatment for the first month then 1 - 2 times per month for a further 2-3 months.


Wax Blockage
Blockage of the ear canal by earwax often causes a feeling of fullness and irritation in the ear.

Earwax, produced by glands in the ear canal, cleans and moistens the canal. Usually wax is produced in small quantities and emerges naturally from the ear. However, if the canal becomes blocked with wax, it causes a feeling of fullness and discomfort and sometimes hearing loss.

Hopi Care : To help clear wax blockage one treatment may be sufficient, however 2 - 3 may be needed dependent upon extent of build up. Regular treatments every 6-8 weeks may help to relieve and prevent excess build up.

Chronic secretary otitis media
This is a persistent collection of fluid in the middle ear common in children under 8 years old. Sometimes referred to as ‘glue ear’ the middle ear becomes filled with a thick, sticky, glue-like fluid. It is the most common cause of impaired hearing in children under the age of 8.

The middle ear is normally ventilated by the Eustachian tube. However, if this tube becomes blocked, possibly as a result of infection, the middle ear may fill with fluid. Often the blockage persists, causing chronic (long term) secretary otitis media.

The symptoms may develop gradually and may initially go unnoticed. The symptoms tend to fluctuate and tend to be worse in the winter months. They may include: partial deafness, immature speech for the child’s age, ear infections.

If symptoms persist for several months grommets will probably be inserted under general anesthetic to allow air to circulate around the middle ear.

Hopi Care : An initial treatment of once per week for 1 month may be sufficient. Regular monthly treatments thereafter may be beneficial.

Allergic rhinitis
Allergic rhinitis is the inflammation of the membrane lining the nose and throat due to an allergic reaction. It affects people who experience an allergic reaction after they inhale specific allergens.
Allergic rhinitis may occur only in the spring and summer, in which case it is known as seasonal allergic rhinitis or hay fever, or it may be perennial and occur all year round.
The symptoms of Allergic rhinitis can include:

  • Itchy sensation in the nose
  • Frequent sneezing
  • Blocked, runny nose
  • Itchy, red, watery eyes


Allergic rhinitis is more common in people who also have other allergic conditions such as asthma. Dependent upon the severity of the condition 2-3 Hopi ear candle treatments may be needed in the first week then 1-2 times in the next 2-3 weeks.

Hopi Care : A monthly treatment may help to reduce the frequency or severity of attacks.

Tension headaches
Moderate or severe pain affecting one or more areas around the head, often as a result of stress.

Hopi Care : The pressure relief and relaxation brought about by a Hopi ear candle treatment can really help this condition. The frequency of treatment will depend upon the severity of the condition.

Tinnitus
This is sounds heard in one or both ears in the absence of any external noise. People with Tinnitus hear sounds that originate within the ear itself. These sounds may include ringing, buzzing or whistling.

Hopi Care : Hopi ear candle treatment can help to reduce the symptoms of Tinnitus by aiding relaxation, however there is no known cure for Tinnitus and whilst some sufferers may find Hopi beneficial, others may not.

Babassu - (Orbignya Oleifera - Brazil) The Babassu tree is a palm tree approximately 20 metres high, which is native to the southeastern region of the Amazon jungle in Brazil. Babassu is a light, yellow, non-drying oil obtained from the kernels of the babassu palm. It has a high content of lauric and myristic acids, which have melting points relatively close to body temperature. This means that, when applied, babassu melts into the skin. This transfer of heat produces a cooling effect on the skin. Babassu forms a protective, soothing coat when applied and a pleasant, velvety feel. Babassu is a superior emollient beneficial for both dry and oily complexions, gently moisturising the skin without contributing to an oily sheen. This oil has properties similar to coconut oil and is used in much the same way for both food and cosmetic purposes.


Sweet Almond - (Prunus Dulcis - Spain) The almond tree originates from Asia and, today, is widely found in California and countries around the Mediterranean, such as Spain. The oil is cold pressed from the kernels of sweet almond fruit and is one of the most popular base oils for use in cosmetics. The oil is rich in beta-sitosterols, alpha-tocopherols, oleic acid and linolenic acid (omega 6), as well as being rich in vitamins A, B1, B2 & B6 which combine to make a highly beneficial oil for use in skin care products. It is particularly beneficial as a moisturiser for dry skin conditions & useful for itchy skin, eczema and psoriasis due to its emollient properties, but is also suitable for sensitive skin and for helping to reduce inflammation. It can be used neat as a skin moisturiser/conditioner or added to creams, lotions, massage bases & bars, ointments and it saponifies easily to produce a good lather.


Coconut - (Cocos nucifera - Phillipines) It is a highly nutritious food source being rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals but recently, coconut oil has been of particular interest and much research has been conducted on its health benefits, both when consumed and when applied topically. It has a long tradition amongst Asian & Pacific populations of being a 'cure for all illnesses' and the coconut palm, termed 'The Tree Of Life' is a highly valued source of nutrition & medicine. Modern scientific research is becoming increasingly more aware of this wonder oil's healing potential. Coconut oil is very different to most other fats and is now known to contain about 50% lauric acid (found abundantly in human breast milk), a unique form of essential fatty acid (medium chain fatty acid or MCFA), which has a positive effect on health & the prevention of disease. It has been described as 'the healthiest oil on earth'. Also, the oil has reportedly been said to assist greatly in weight loss and 'The Coconut Diet' has many faithful followers. The oil can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions, from eczema to acne, nappy rash to wrinkles. The oil is known to have great antioxidant properties as well as being known to kill bacteria, fungi and viruses to name a few. Ylang Ylang genuina (Cananga odorata - Madagascar) Distilled from the freshly picked flowers, this intensely fragrant oil is renowned in Indonesia for its aphrodisiac properties and it has long been used in skin and hair products – a concept adopted by the Victorians. Its aroma is intensely rich, sweet, heady and floral. It has a sweet-balsamic, slightly spicy base and creamy top note. It blends well with the rich, sweet-woody notes of rosewood and floral notes of jasmine, rose and tuberose. Vetivert adds an interesting, smokey element to this rich, exotic aroma. Widely used as a perfume component and fixative in perfumes and cosmetics, in particular Oriental types blends. Ylang ylang III is the prefered choice for use in soaps, body detergents and bath & massage oils.

Black Pepper - (Piper nigrum - Madagascar) The woody perennial that can grow to a height of 5 metres and is native to West India, but is widely cultivated in tropical climates. Major producers include India, Madagascar, Malaysia, china and Indonesia. Used widely as a culinary & medicinal product for some 4000 years. This warm, woody, spicy yet fresh aroma with hints of cloves is steamdistilled from the peppercorns and is thought to be particularly useful for fever and digestive problems. It is a very warming oil and very good for muscular aches & pains.

Geranium - (Pelargonium graveolens - Egypt) Geraniums are native to South Africa but extensively cultivated throughout the world. Although there are around 700 varieties of geranium, only a few actually produce essential oil (Pelargonium roseum, Pelargonium graveolens, Pelargonium odorantissimum and Pelargonium radula). The entire plant is aromatic. Geranium is a powerful ingredient in fragrant blends. Green, sweet that can be sometimes rosy, sometimes minty and often has a fruity note. The aroma is fairly strong. Geranium is thought to have a rather pronounced effect on the nervous system and is one of the best all round tonics. It can gently stimulate the circulatory system and help to balance the hormones. In skin care it is excellent in helping to brighten and dull complextion. A good choice for feminine blends/products and is particularly useful in skin care. This oil can help improve circulation / useful for cellulites, oedema, poor circulation; Sore throats; Problems associated with the menopause; PMT; Neuralgia; Helpful in detox formulas. And emotionally may aid in Lack of balance (life generally); Low tolerance; Excessive talking; Mood swings; Anxiety; Nervous tension; Negative thoughts; Aggression; Some view it as sedative, some as a stimulant In skin care treatments is specially recommended in cases of Problem skins such as acne, congestion & oiliness; Good choice for mature skin; Skin conditions such as dermatitis & eczema; Insect repellent (especially mosquitoes); Fungal infections such as ringworm; Broken capillaries (spider veins). The best Jasmine oil is collected at night when the scent is strongest.. This high quality oil comes from the jasmine that blooms during the day and is considered to be exceedingly effective as an aphrodisiac. The traditional empirical and anecdotal narrative for Jasmine, often known as the "king of flower oils" is its ability to warm the emotions by calming the nerves and encouraging feelings of confidence. Native to Persia and Kashmir, yasmin meaning "Gift from God". Arab poets sung its praises and used it as symbol of love and spiritual longing. Also associated throughout history with the goddess of the moon, Isis, the Egyptian mother goddess who held the secrets of fertility, magic and healing. She is thought to have founded the custom of marriage. Jasmine's nature is to assist each individual's awareness of their unique passions and desires. Jasmine Grandiflorum is a beautiful plant; its flowers bloom in the early dawn as opposed to Jasmine Sambac that blooms in the evening. Jasmine Grandiflorum is well respected for its aphrodisiac properties. It is a sensual, soothing, calming oil that promotes love and peace. Jasmine Grandiflorum has a smooth, extremely intense floral smell that is both sweet and lingering. Note: Since ancient times, Jasmine has been referred to as the King of oils (Rose is the Queen). Apparently this is because Jasmine is the most masculine of all the floral oils. Full Body Massage - Tips

    1. Create the right atmosphere/ambiance. It is important to have a cozy, quiet, warm room. Maybe you'll want to spread roses to create a loving feeling.
    2. Use heating/cooling to get the right temperature (note that during a massage most bodies are cooling down).
    3. Use lamps or candles to have a warm ambiance that is not too bright and not too dark, and to bring a nice aroma to the room.
    4. Make sure that the neighbourhood cannot observe the massage - close your curtains.
    5. Prepare massage oil - Jojoba oil is very good, Almond oil is cheap and good, Grapeseed oil is great for the skin and doesn't leave as thick a residue. *Do not use products with petroleum.*
    6. Spread a linen on the floor to protect it from oil (giving a massage on a bed or sofa is not recommended).
    7. Place a blanket or adequate cover over the linen (the person lies afterwards in between the linen and blanket).
    8. Prepare yourself - cut your nails, take a bath to relax yourself, concentrate on the upcoming massage and person, relax with yoga, mental methods or breathing techniques, put on some comfortable clothes
    9. Have your partner take off his/her clothes and lie between the blanket and linen on his/her stomach. If the partner takes all clothes off it will feel more relaxing. If partner doesn't want to then it would be fine to stay in underwear, opening the bra during the back massage and closing it before turning over.
    10. Pull the blanket covering the right leg away (only reveal the body part that you are massageing at that time, this keeps them warm and secure).
    11. Place yourself on the right side next to your partner on the thigh of the lower leg.
    12. Use your flat hands to smoothly slide from the foot to the bottom on top of the back of the right leg and slide again down.
    13. Knead the right leg from the bottom to the top in 3 parts (inner, middle, outer part of the leg).
    14. Use your flat hands to smoothly slide from the foot to the bottom on top of the back of the right leg and slide again down. Repeat the same process for the left leg.(Avoid the back of the knee, there is no muscle there to massage and it can be very sore)
    15. Put the blanket back
    16. Repeat on other leg.
    17. Reveal the back of your partner by moving the part of the blanket that is at the head onto the bottom.
    18. Place yourself at the head facing the legs. Use your flat hands to smoothly slide from head to the bottom. Each hand is close to the spine, one on the right and the other one on the left side of the spine. Slide over the edge of the bottom to the side and slide on the sides upwards and just underneath the scapulas(shoulder blades) you slide back to the spine and move the rest back up to the beginning of the shoulders. Do this 3 times.
    19. Place yourself onto the side of the back of your partner and with your left hand, do a full circle on his or her back. With your right hand, do a half circle beginning away from your left going clockwise. You should do this very slowly, smooth and sensitive. Start at the bottom and circle your way up to the shoulders.
    20. Cover the back again
    21. Let your partner turn onto his back.
    22. Massage the left leg using smooth motions over the front of the shin and deeper pressure over the thigh. A foot massage using circling motions with your thumbs starting at the heel and working your way to the toes can feel great but many people will not allow you to touch their feet so check first.
    23. Repeat on the right leg
    24. Lift the left hand and hold it up so that the elbow is clear of the floor using your left hand. With your right slide your hand along the back of the forearm and up the tricep(back of the arm)and around the shoulder and back the way you came. When your right hand is back at the wrist change over and hold the hand up with your right and slide with your left down the inside of the forearm, up the bicep and around the shoulder and back. Do each of these three times. Put the arm down and knead the forearm and upper arm.
    25. Take the hand into yours and massage the palm with your thumbs in small circles. Take each finger in turn and slowly slide from the knuckles to the nail holding it firmly in your hand without pulling it painfully.
    26. Cover this arm and repeat on other arm
    27. Move to the head, sit facing the feet with the head directly in front of you
    28. Rub your hands and place them slowly over your partner's eyes - do not touch him/her just a bit above his head - try to stay like this for 1 - 2 minutes.
    29. Again touching your partner, slide your thumbs from the part between the eyebrows to the point where the hair starts.
    30. Place your thumbs a bit higher and move them apart.
    31. Do it again until you reach the beginning of the ear.
    32. Do the same starting below the eyes moving over the cheeks.
    33. Do the same on the upper lip (between nose and lips).
    34. Do the same underneath the lip (between lips and chin).
    35. Place each of your hands onto one shoulder and relax. This is a time for the tow of you to connect, share the moment and allow them to come awake in their own time.

[ ]Ayurveda is a wholistic system of medicine from India that uses a constitutional model. Its aim is to provide guidance regarding food and lifestyle so that healthy people can stay healthy and folks with health challenges can improve their health.

There are several aspects to Ayurveda that are quite unique:

  1. Its recommendations will often be different for each person regarding which foods and which lifestyle they should follow in order to be completely healthy. This is due to it's use of a constitutional model.
  2. Everything in Ayurveda is validated by observation, inquiry, direct examination and knowledge derived from the ancient texts.
  3. It understands that there are energetic forces that influence nature and human beings. These forces are called the Tridoshas.
  4. Because Ayurveda sees a strong connection between the mind and the body, a huge amount of information is available regarding this relationship.

Origin

[ ]Ayurveda is an intricate system of healing that originated in India thousands of years ago. We can find historical evidence of Ayurveda in the ancient books of wisdom known as the Vedas. In the Rig Veda, over 60 preparatison were mentioned that could be used to assist an individual in overcoming various ailments. The Rig Veda was written over 6,000 years ago, but really Ayurveda has been around even longer than that. What we see is that A yurveda is more than just a medical system. It is a Science of Life. We are all part and parcel of nature. Just as the animals and plants live in harmony with nature and utilize the Laws of Nature to create health and balance within their beings, we, too, adhere to these very same principles. Therefore, it is fair to say that Ayurveda is a system that helps maintain health in a person by using the inherent principles of nature to bring the individual back i nto equilibrium with their true self. In essence Ayurveda has been in existence since the beginning of time because we have always been governed by nature's laws.

Meaning

[ ]Ayurveda is made up of two Sanskrit words: Ayu which means life and Veda which means the knowledge of. To know about life is Ayurveda. However, to fully comprehend the vast s cope of Ayurveda let us first define "Ayu" or life. According to the ancient Ayurvedic scholar Charaka, "ayu" is comprised of four essential parts. The combination of mind, body, senses and the soul.

Mind, Body, and Sences

[ ]We tend to identify most with our physical bodies; yet, in actuality, there is more to us then what meets the eye. We can see that underlying our physical structure is the mind, which not only controls our thought processes but helps assist us in carrying out day-to-day activities such as respiration, circulation, digestion and elimination. The mind and the body work in conjunction with one another to regulate our physiology. In order for the mind to act appropriately to assist the physical body, we must use our senses as information gatherers. We can think of the mind as a computer and the senses as the data which gets entered into the computer. Smell and taste are two important senses th at aid in the digestive process. When the mind registers that a particular food is entering the gastrointestinal tract, it directs the body to act accordingly by releasing various digestive enzymes. However, if we overindulge the taste buds with too much of a certain taste, such as sweet, we may find that the ability of the mind to perceive the sweet taste is impaired; and thereby the body becomes challenged in its ability to process sweet foods. Maintaining the clarity of our senses is an essential part in allowing the mind and body to integrate their functions and help in keeping us healthy and happy individuals.

SOUL

[ ]Ayurveda also sees that before we exist in physical form with the help of the mind and senses that we exist in a more subtle form known as the soul. The ancient seers of India believed tha t we were comprised of a certain energetic essence that precluded the inhabitance of our physical entity. In fact, they hypothesized that we may indeed occupy many physical bodies throughout the course of time but that our underlying self or soul remains unchanged. What we see to help illustrate this concept is what transpires at the time of death. When the individual nears the time to leave the physical body, many of his/her desires will cease to be present. As the soul no longer identifies with the bod y, the desire to eat food or indulge in a particular activity that used to be a great source of satisfaction for that person drops by the wayside. In fact, many individuals have been documented to experience the sensation of being "out of their bodies."

These are just a few examples of how we are made up of these four components that we call life.

Principles

[ ]Now that we have a better understanding of what comprises life, let's look at some of the principles of Ayurveda and how they might affect us.

[ ]In Ayurveda we view a person as a unique individual made up of five primary elements. The elements are ether (space), air, fire, water, and earth. Just as in nature, we too have these five elements in us. When any of these elements are present in the environment, they will in turn have an influence on us. The foods we eat and the weather are just two examples of the presence of these elements. While we are a composite of these five primar y elements, certain elements are seen to have an ability to combine to create various physiological functions. Ether and air combine to form what is known in Ayurveda as the Vata dosha. Vata governs the principle of movement and therefore can be seen as the force which directs nerve impulses, circulation, respiration, and elimination. Fire and water are the elements that combine to form the Pitta dosha. The Pitta dosha is the process of transf ormation or metabolism. The transformation of foods into nutrients that our bodies can assimilate is an example of a pitta function. Pitta is also responsible for metabolism in the organ and tissue systems as well as cellular metabolism. Finally, it is pr edominantly the water and earth elements which combine to form the Kapha dosha. Kapha is what is responsible for growth, adding structure unit by unit. Another function of the Kapha dosha is to offer protection. Cerebral-sp inal fluid protects the brain and spinal column and is a type of Kapha found in the body. Also, the mucousal lining of the stomach is another example of the Kapha dosha protecting the tissues. We are all made up of unique proportions of Vata, Pitta and Ka pha. These ratios of the doshas vary in each individual; and because of this, Ayurveda sees each person as a special mixture that accounts for our diversity.

[ ]Ayurveda gives us a model to look at each individual as a unique makeup of the three doshas and to thereby design treatment protocols that specifically address a persons health challenges. When any of the doshas ( Vata, Pitta or Kapha ) become accumulated, Ayurveda will suggest specific lifestyle and nutritional guidelines to assist the individual in reducing the dosha that has become excessive. We may also suggest certain herbal supplemen ts to hasten the healing process. If toxins in the body are abundant, then a cleansing process known as Pancha Karma is recommended to eliminate these unwanted toxins.

[ ]This understanding that we are all unique individuals enables Ayurveda to address not only specific health concerns but also offers explanation as to why one person responds differently th an another. What are the Tridoshas?

Ayurveda's concept of the Tridoshas is unique to medical science. Ayurveda says the body is made up of tissues (dhatus), waste products (malas), and doshas (loosely translated to Energetic Forces). It is the Tridoshas' job to assist with the creation of all of the various tissues of the body and to remove any unnecessary waste products from the body. It is also the Tridoshas that influence all movements, all transformations, all sensory functions, and many of the other activities in the human body and mind.

Vata dosha

The Vata dosha is the most important of the three doshas. This is for two reasons. First, if Vata becomes imbalanced for long enough and sufficiently enough, it can also cause the other two doshas (Pitta or Kapha) to become imbalanced. It can even cause both Pitta and Kapha to become imbalanced; this is called a Tridoshic imbalance and is the most difficult to overcome. Secondly, Vata is the main driver or mover of the body, including the other two doshas, all the tissues (dhatus) and all of the waste products (malas).
Vata provides the following functions:
All eliminations: fetus, semen, feces, urine, sweat, and a few others
Assists with all the various metabolisms in the body (called Agni in Ayurveda)
Controls all of the various movement of body (both physical & mental),
including such things as respiration, heart beat, motivation and contraction of muscles
Relays all sensory input from the various sense organs to the brain

Pitta dosha

The Pitta dosha is associated with fire or heat. Wherever there is transformation, there is Pitta (doing its job). Whether it is in the GI tract, liver, skin, eyes or brain doesn't matter, for these are all locations where Pitta works.
Pitta provides the following functions:
Metabolism - at all the various levels
from digestion of food to transformation of all other material
Thermogenesis - maintains the proper body temperature
Vision - converts external images into optic nerve impulses
Appetite - the feeling of hunger and thirst
Comprehension - of information into knowledge, also reasoning and judgment
Courage & Braveness - to face the situation
Complexion - gives color and softness to skin

Kapha dosha

Kapha is the heaviest of the three doshas. It provides the structures and the lubrication that the body needs. These qualities help to counterbalance Vata's movement and Pitta's metabolism. A big, heavyset football play or wrestler is a person with a predominance of Kapha.
Kapha provides the following functions:
Strength - to perform physical tasks
Moistness & Lubrication - to prevent excessive friction from occurring between the various parts of the body
Stability - to add the necessary grounding aspect to both mind and body
Mass & Structure - to provide fullness to bodily tissues
Fertility & Virility - to produce healthy offspring

Why should I care?

Because by learning how to balance the Tridoshas, the following goals can likely be achieved:
Prevention of many diseases before they take hold
(In other words, keep healthy folks healthy)
In many cases, slowing down or reversing the disease process
(particularly the case in many auto immune disorders)
Assistance in becoming totally healthy: physically, mentally, and spiritually
(In other words, maximize your full potential)
What is really nice about Ayurveda is that learning to balance the Tridoshas is easy. Much of Ayurveda is common sense; it is based upon the laws of nature. The tools one uses to balance the Tridoshas are lifestyle management and the proper nutritional protocols.
Nutritional Protocols? What is this term - Nutritional Protocols? Wouldn't some people call this diet? Sure, some would; however, we definitely would not use this word. I wouldn't want to be on a diet, would you? On the other hand, learning to eat tasty, well-balanced meals that are easy to digest and even easier to cook -- now that's something I like!

Ayurveda goes into great detail explaining all of these different aspects of the body, how the functioning of the body can go wrong, and what to do in order to correct the problem. Likewise, it also explains how each individual can create a customized nutritional protocol and lifestyle plan that can prevent disorders from occurring in the first place.


What is the Normal State of the Tridoshas?

When the Tridoshas are balanced, the individual experiences health on all levels: mental, physical and spiritual. This is much more than the mere absence of disease.
The following areas help to define what Ayurveda considers as health.

Happiness - sense of well being
Emotions - evenly balanced emotional states
Mental Functions - good memory, comprehension, intelligence, and reasoning ability
Senses - proper functioning of eyes, ears, nose, taste, and touch
Energy - abundant mental & physical energy to perform
Digestion - easy digestion of food and drink
Elimination - normal elimination of wastes: sweat, urine, feces and others
Physical Body - healthy bodily tissues, organs, and systems


What causes the Tridoshas to become Imbalanced?

Each of the three doshas have certain quantity, qualities, and functions. When all of these are balanced, it is called normal or balanced (Dosha Shamya). This condition is conducive to well-being, health, and wellness. However, this balanced state is not stable; it is always changing. The Doshas will become either increased (vriddhi) or decreased (kasaya). Both of these states lead to ill-health or disease. However, increased Doshas have much more power to cause problems than do decreased Doshas. The important point here is to understand that each dosha has a set of qualities (gunas) associated with it which can increase or decrease in quantity.

§ Qualities of Vata Dosha

Cold, Light, Dry, Rough, Hard, Mobile and the Ability to penetrate fine particles

§ Qualities of Pitta Dosha

Hot, Sharp, Slightly Oily, Penetrating, Liquid, Light and can be sour and foul smelling when excessively increased

§ Qualities of Kapha Dosha

Cool, Heavy, Dense, Stable, Oily and slimy

§ Natural - imbalances

Natural imbalance is due to time and age, which are mild and normally do not cause any problems. Vata, Pitta, and Kapha increase and become predominant during one's life, during a season and during certain times of day. For example, Vata is predominant during the latter part of one's life, during the fall season and during late afternoon, as well as during the last part of night and the last part of digestion. Whew!! I know that's a lot of stuff! Hang in there! Pitta is predominant during middle age, during the summer season, at midday, at midnight and during the middle part of digestion. Kapha is predominant during childhood, during the spring season, in late morning, at the first part of evening and during the early part of digestion.

§ Unnatural - imbalances

Unnatural imbalances of the Doshas can be caused by such things as: inappropriate diet, inappropriate lifestyle, trauma (like a car accident), viruses, parasites, etc. While some of these items are beyond our control, the type of lifestyle we live and the foods we eat are within our control.

§ Like increases Like

To learn how to reduce the Tridoshas, it is first necessary to understand what causes the Tridoshas to increase. The reason, according to a simple rule in Ayurvedic principles, is: "Like increases Like, while Dislike (opposite) decreases Like." For example, if you are cold and you eat ice cream, you will become colder; or if you are hot and you eat chilli peppers, you will become hotter. These examples, which seem so obvious, are the basis for much of what is done in Ayurveda that allows its exceptional results. Herein lies one of the true beauties of Ayurveda: its principles are so simple, so basic, that it naturally appeals to common sense.

§ Example of Vata increasing Lifestyle and Foods

So if we engage in either lifestyles or consumes foods that have Vata qualities one will be increasing the Vata dosha in themself. Some examples of Vata increasing activities are the following: running outside in the fall while dressed lightly when it is cold, dry with lots of winds blowing, going to rock concert after skipping a meal and not having slept all night, eating popcorn while driving in traffic with the music blasting, never taking time to rest, relax and take it easy. Basically any activity that is nerve racking and/or highly stimulating is going to increase (aggravate) Vata. Example of Vata increasing foods would be things that have the above mentioned qualities and/or taste bitter, astringent or pungent like: popcorn, rice cakes, beans, cayenne pepper, coffee and alfalfa sprouts.

Therefore, note that whatever one does that has the above mentioned qualities (food,lifestyle,relationship) in it will cause that dosha to increase(aggravate).

And the name of the game in preventing disease is not to aggravate any of the Tridoshas; to keep them calm and happy. So all you need is to understand what factors increase and decrease each of the three doshas; Vata, Pitta and Kapha and follow those recommendations when necessary to avoid disease and promote overall health. Really it's actually quite simple. Most of us can follow those Lifestyle suggestions for reducing each of the three doshas, and simply follow a Tridoshic nutritional program. - Ayurvedic Detoxification and Rejuvenation -

Pancha Karma is the cornerstone to Ayurvedic management of disease. The therapeutic management involved with Pancha Karma covers many aspects and is designed to achieve increased efficiency of medicines, foods and rasayanas (tonics). Before medicine, food or rejuvenative tonics are taken, it is essential that the body become receptive so that it is capable of absorbing and assimilating what is being taken and that the accumulated wastes and toxins are eliminated. An analogy of this would be if one tries to dye cloth that is heavily soiled and dirty the dye will not take very well; however, if the same cloth was properly cleaned then dyed the dye would work beautifully. In addition this therapy greatly enhances one's natural immunity thereby providing additional protection from many diseases and disorders.

There are several eliminative procedures in Pancha Karma that assist in eliminating toxins.

Therapeutic vomiting (vamana) promotes elimination from the stomach and thoracic cavity.

Purgation (virechana) promotes elimination from the small intestine.

Therapeutic enema (basti) works on the colon to eliminate toxins and strengthens the tissues.

Nose drops (nasya) cleanse toxins from the head and sinuses.

Warm oil massage and sweat therapies prepare the body to eliminate the toxins (doshas) from their respective zones. This approach is unique in that it insures that the underlying tissues are not damaged by the elimination procedures mentioned above. This attention to the proper preparation of the body prior to the elimination of toxins is unequal in the health care field and is what makes Pancha Karma so unique and effective.

After Pancha Karma a specific graded diet is followed for seven days to assure that the agni returns to a normal balanced state and that no further Ama (toxins) is formed in the GI tract.

In addition to the previously mentioned karmas there are many other therapeutic techniques that Ayurveda has to offer that can be used singularly or in combination for the desired effect upon the patient.

TRIDOSHIC RECIPES - Meals to Everyone

§ Kisharee
Ingredients:

1 inch Fresh ginger root
1 small handful of cilantro leaves
2 TBS. Ghee (clarified butter)
1/2 tsp. Turmeric
1/2 tsp. Coriander powder
1/2 tsp. Cumin powder
1/2 tsp. Whole cumin seeds
1/2 tsp. Mustard seeds
1/2 tsp. Salt (rock salt is best)
1 pinch Hing (also called Asafoetida)
5-7 cups Water (amount of water depends upon climate)

*Note: Can use Bragg’s Amino Acid for extra flavor after cooking is completed.
Also can be used as a replacement for salt.

Directions:

Wash dal and rice together until water runs clear. Heat a large sauce pan on medium heat then add ghee (clarified butter), next mustard seeds, tumeric, hing, whole cumin seeds, cumin powder, and coriander powder. Stir all together for a few minutes. Then add rice, dal and stir again. Now add the water, salt and bring to a boil. Cook for 10 minutes. Next turn heat down to low, cover, and continue cooking until both dal and rice becomes soft. The cilantro leaves can be added before serving.

Benefits:

Tridosha balancing, and useful for detoxifying, very easy to digest.

1 pinch hing
2 TBS. Chopped fresh cilantro leaves
1/2 tsp. Salt (Rock salt is best)
1/2 tsp. Ground coriander seeds
1/2 tsp. Ground cumin seeds

Directions:

Wash the mung dal untill the water runs clear. Heat pot on medium heat, add water and dal. Cook for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning. Then in sauce pan at medium heat add ghee when it is liquid you can add spices (add salt to taste). Then add spicey ghee mix to soap. Before serving garnish with freshly chopped cilantro leaves.

Benefits:

This dish reduces both Kapha and Vata doshas. With the spices it reduces the Pitta dosha. It is very easy to digest.


§ Cilantro Chutney
Ingredients:

1/2 Cup Fresh Chopped Cilantro leaves
1/2 Cup Fresh Grated Coconut or dried is OK
1/2 tsp. Fresh Grated Ginger
1/2 tsp. Whole Cumin seeds
1 tsp. Fresh Lime juice
Water - just enough to mix together

Directions:

Wash cilantro leaves thoughly, then chop cilantro removing thick stems. Add cilantro, coconut, grated ginger, cumin seeds, lime juice, and salt into blender. Blend together at high speed until it is thoughly mix together (it should be like a fine paste). You may need to add a small amount of water. This chutney can be eaten as a appetizer with other foods.

Benefits:

Balances all three doshas. Cilantro has a cooling properties, it reduces the Pitta dosha. Both ginger and cumin stimulate and aid in digestion.


§ Ghee Clarified Butter
Preparation time: less then 30 minutes

Ingredients:

1 lb. High Quality Butter (Organic is best)

Bring the butter to boil in a medium saucepan. Reduce heat to medium and cook uncovered until done. There are a couple of ways to determine when it is done. One way is after the butter turns a clear golden color, dip a strip of paper into the butter, then move away from the butter and all other flammables and light the strip of paper on fire, if the paper sputters, crackles and pops, then the water has not been completely cooked-out and the ghee is not yet done. After using this method a time or two you can easily tell by the smell and color when the ghee has been properly cooked. Note when the butter first starts to boil there will be alot of bubbling and gurgling, then this action will subside, next the ghee will begin to develop a foam at the top, at this point the ghee is done. Once you make Ghee a time or two it becomes easy to tell when it is done.

Comments:

What is Ghee? It's is basically butter that has the milk solids and water removed. According to Ayurveda, Ghee (clarified butter) is the best oil for cooking. This is because when used in moderation it stimulates the digestion (Agni) better than any other oil. It also has the ability to increase ones immunity (called Ojas in Ayurveda). Give it a try! It is very tasty and without the side effects of plain butter. If your are like the rest of us around here you will not go back to using any other oil for your cooking. Note Ghee does not require refrigeration if you keep mosture out of it; for example, don't dip a wet spoon into the ghee jar.


§ Mixed Vegetables
Ingredients:

1 Cup Fresh Asparagus
1/4 Cup Red & Yellow Bell Pepper
1 tsp. Fresh Ground Cumin seed Powder
1 tsp. Fresh Ground Corrinder seed Powder
1 tsp. Whole Cumin seeds
1 tsp. Mustard Seeds
Pinch Hing
1-2 TBS. Ghee (recipes above)
1 tsp. Salt

Directions:

Melt ghee in medium sause pan then add spices except for salt and saute. Add vegetables and cook on medium heat, stir often to prevent burning of veggies. When veggies are soft and well cooked, then add-in salt and garnish with cilantro before serving.

Benefits:

Balances all three doshas. Is easy to digest and you can try different vegetables for variety.

§ Lime Rice
Ingredients:

1 Cup White Basmati Rice
2 Cups Water
1 TBS. Urad Dal or Mung dal
1/2 tsp. Mustard Seeds
1/2 tsp. Tumeric Powder
2 TBS. Ground Coconut
Pinch Hing
1 tsp. Whole Cumin seeds
1 tsp. Fresh Lime juice (or more to taste)
2 TBS. Ghee
1 tsp. Salt

Directions:

Cooking rice and dal with water for 10 to 12 minutes. Saute spices (except for salt) in melted ghee. Then mix rice and sautéed spice mix together (along with lime juice). Add salt. Before serving you can add cilantro and grated coconut to make the dish more colorful.

Benefits:

Balances all three doshas. Both ginger and cumin stimulate and aid in digestion.


§ Simple Greens
Ingredients:

2 Cup Fresh Greens (about 1 cup per Person)
2 tsp. Ghee (clarifed butter)
1 tsp. Raw Sugar
1/2 tsp. Whole Cumin Seeds
1 tsp. Whole Corriander Seeds
1/2 tsp. Turmeric Powder
1-2 Tbs. Ghee

Directions:

Rinse the greens thoughly then slice them into 1 inch squares, remove all stems if you want to make extra smooth you can put into blender. Place either a wok or sauce pan on medium high heat, then add the ghee, when it's hot add the spices and stir for few seconds. Next add the greens stiring constantly until soft and well cooked but not soggy.

Effects:

Greens are bitter which normally reduces Pitta (fire), however greens are unique in that their effect during digestion is heating. Therefore we add some sugar and corriander seeds to cool things down a bit and make this dish more Tridoshic(balancing for everyone). After digestion in the G.I. tract greens have Pungent Vipak which means they causes a reducing of tissue mass in the body, again the addition of sugar and corriander in this recipe helps offset some of the strong effects of greens. However most people shouldn't eat greens more then a couple times a week, otherwise these above mentioned effects of greens can become too imbalancing (on doshas & dhatus).
