The idea of using a pendulum is to gain yes/no answers to questions that you would like to have answered, such as "Which flower essence do I need to take right now?" When a pendulum is held and asked such a question, it will swing either clockwise or anti-clockwise to indicate the yes or no answer.
Hold the pendulum by its chain between your thumb and forefinger so that it dangles down and can swing freely (see picture).
Although it is possible for the pendulum to move from this position into a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction, it can take some time for this to happen, especially when learning. However, if you swing the pendulum deliberately backwards and forwards, the momentum has begun and it takes much less time for the pendulum to swing to either yes or no.
Now you need to find out which way your pendulum will move for yes. Note that different people can find that it moves a different way - for example, Arthur's pendulum moves clockwise for yes, whereas Chris' pendulum goes anti-clockwise for yes.
Clear your mind of things as much as possible, focus on the present moment and say to your pendulum "Indicate yes". Repeat this statement at intervals to maintain your focus and soon your pendulum will start to move clockwise or anti-clockwise. This is your yes.
Once you have established yes, ask the pendulum to indicate no. The pendulum will swing the other way.
Now you can start using your pendulum to ask questions. Please note however, that there are some questions that the pendulum will simply not answer reliably - such as which numbers will win the lottery etc!!!
If the above course has whetted your appetite to learn more, or raised questions for you, why not consider attending a dowsing course, or buying Arthur's book, "Anyone Can Dowse for Better Health" (see book section).
