Indian Head Massage

Indian head massage has its origins in Ayurveda ("science of life") the ancient Indian system of medicine which was developed by holy men in the Himalayas thousands of years ago.

Ayurveda in its entirity is a whole way of life, incorporating exercise, meditation, herbs, diet and massage for a healthy mind and body in harmonious balance. Indian head massage is just one aspect of this, and can be enjoyed therapeutically or just as a treat.

How the Indian Head massage works

The massage works the upper back, shoulders and upper arms, as well as the neck, head and face. As the upper back, shoulders and neck muscles are all interdependent, this is the best way to effectively ease muscle tension and free the neck muscles. I also give a face massage using a non scented face lotion for complete relaxation and effective ease of all round muscle tension.

Two forms of treatment:

1. Indian Head Massage with oils - After a twenty minute consultation, a massage carrier oil is chosen which best corresponds to the client's requirements. I do not use essential oils as I am not qualified in aromatherapy, but the massage base carrier oils such as sesame, sweet almond and jojoba all have their own therapeutic qualities.

To assist with a relaxing massage the carrier oil enables a smooth and effective massage and helps to strengthen the hair roots. The oil massage ends with pressure point massage on the face, which is gentle and soothing, and also very effective for those who suffer with sinus congestion.

If you prefer, I can massage the scalp without extra oil: although it does strengthen the hair and can soothe an irritated scalp, it's not too attractive if you need to be seen in public afterwards! This type of massage is an ideal way to relax after a day at work or during the weekend, it takes 30 minutes so with a 20 minute consultation and ten minutes to ground the whole treatment can take an hour.

2. Indian Head massage over clothes - For this option, you need to wear a short or long sleeved top, preferably t-shirt style. The massage stroke uses the movement of the clothing to work across the muscles of the back and arms. This massage takes thirty minutes too and ideal for a lunch-break treat. I use a non-scented lotion of the face during this treatment, as I believe that the delicate facial skin may be stretched if massaged without any lotion or carrier oils.

Can I have Indian head and neck massage?

Indian head massage is suitable for most adults. There are some medical conditions which I would consider unsuitable; these include:

Tumour in the head and neck area, Infectious scalp conditions, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Downs Syndrome (due to malformation in the second cervical vertebra I would not consider this treatment safe), Indian head massage is also unsuitable for children under 12 (as the bones of the neck have not fully ossified before this age).

Indian head and neck massage can be effective for:

- Stress and related conditions

- Migraines and tension headaches

- Sinus congestion

- Anxiety

- Muscle tension

- Insomnia

Treatment normally begins with a facial massage using a non scented lotion. The face massage works with acupressure points to help relieve any sinus pressure, stimulate the circulation and increase alertness, after each set of pressure points is worked on they are drained into the lymphatic system to drain away any toxins that have built up in those areas being treated. The ears are also worked on by gently using a tugging and pressing technique. The front of the head is gently worked on, however the head is worked on more after the back, shoulders and neck have been massaged.

If laying on their back on a massage couch, the client is then asked to turn over / or gently tilted forwards - if sitting on a chair.

The back is then worked on by receiving a vigerous rubbing on the top of back and shoulders areas to get the circulation moving and muscles warmed up. This is followed by various rubbing, kneading, chopping and stroking movements. The massage movements move into the shoulders and neck area for a soothing massage then the head is worked with the scalp being squeezed, rubbed, gently tapped and prodded. The hair is briskly tussled and gently combed. This is done with base carrier oils for maximum effect or without oils if it is to be done in the workplace.

The whole experience complements conventional medication.

Champi is a head, neck shoulder, face/ear and sometimes arm and hand massage which can take from 20 minutes to 1 hour. It addresses the fact that much of the tension and discomfort in our body is held and manifested as mental and emotional distress in the head, neck, shoulders and face initially.

Trauma to the body is felt by sensory nerves which transmit this information to the brain. The brain then sends out messages, via motor nerves, to muscles and blood vessels in the area of the trauma, to guard the area of injury. This creates tension and pain. A Champi Massage directly to the head and neck resets the brain and the nervous system to send out more calming messages. Thus any tense and painful area of the body can experience relief with just a head and neck focused Champi Massage.

Champi may be done while client is fully clothed in any space able to accommodate a chair. Shoulders, arms hands, neck, scalp and face are areas of focus applying various techniques with or without herbal oil selected according to your Ayurvedic constitution. By massaging the points which reveal the greatest tension held, stress is relieved with a variety of strokes ranging from warming friction rubs to tapotment (tapping, chopping, plucking, cupping, etc.) and superficial to deep application of acupressure. This massage technique provides almost immediate relief and has a strong effect on the three highest chakras causing reflexive balancing of the lower Chakras resulting in a state of tranquility and general well being.

Benefits:

Improves circulation in the head and stimulates the nervous system, thus improving memory and clear thinking.

Gives relief from headaches, migraines, insomnia, tinnitis, vertigo and depression. It is also said that the head massage addresses the harmful effect of cell phone radiation.

Relaxes eye muscles which regularly experience strain due to Chronic computer and other close up work.

Boosts the immune system

Stimulates scalp and hair growth

Restores joint movement all over the body

Rebalances vital energy flow.

Mobilizes inflammatory toxins in tense and knotted muscles and detoxifies by improving lymphatic circulation.

Champi Head, Neck and Shoulder Massage can be tailored to your needs. We live in stressful time and your head massage can alleviate tension and help you achieve a relaxed, calm frame of mind. On the other hand - a stimulating Champi Head Massage can help clarify the mind and enable you to concentrate without tension.

Remember: prevention is better than cure. Once you show signs of improvement we will continue to work with you to keep harmony and balance already achieved. A regular treatment, depending on your timetable, will stop future stress accumulating.

What is Champi massage?

This is a very gentle nurturing form of head, neck and shoulder massage. The technique involves strokes which at first appear too gentle to have any effect but you come out feeling very relaxed, centred and nurtured.

History

Champi massage was developed by Narendra Mehta who, although blinded from the age of one, is an accomplished Osteopath, Physiotherapist and Massage Therapist. Mr Mehta came to London to study Physiotherapy during the 1970’s and was dismayed to discover that massage treatments always stopped at the neck, even full body massage!

In 1978, he decided to return to India and research head massage wherever it was practised. During his journey, he found the methods used varied from person to person. The barbers would concentrate on his scalp, while his mother and her women friends focused on treating the hair. In addition, everyone who worked with him had his or her own individual technique, which had been handed down and developed through the generations. Mr Mehta decided to begin to formalise what he was experiencing and used the knowledge of his massage training to discover which part of his body reacted most positively to various moves. Because of his blindness his other senses are very finely tuned and he was able to concentrate with complete absorption on the effect the massage was having. By this means Narendra Mehta was able to devise a therapy that would bring the greatest relief to the multitude of problems concentrated in the head and soon concluded that the therapy would benefit by being extended to include not only the head but also the neck, shoulders and upper arms.

Narendra Mehta has continued to develop and expand his techniques over the years. One of the most important developments being the introduction of an Ayurvedic element of chakra energy balancing and the extension of the massage element to include massage of the face and ears to enhance the overall effect.
